Fruit kebabs!

Last week, Mrs Jarvis' Marvelous maths group made fruit kebabs. Here is a message from her!
"Hi everyone,
We wanted to share our learning with you.  Over the last few weeks we have been exploring fractions and equal sharing.  Before we made kebabs we had to share the fruit out between the 9 people in our group.  Sometimes we got a whole piece of fruit, or more than one of each fruit. Other times we only got a part or a fraction of the fruit. We are strong mathematicians who show and represent our thinking in different ways.  We have been using equipment, equations, pictures and relationship charts to help justify our thinking.
We had so much fun and the fruit kebabs were delicious!"

Writing spooky Halloween stories

Today we started learning about how to build tension for our spooky stories. We learnt that we should use 1. A simile 2. Some short sentences 3. An ellipses (...)
We looked at this picture, and then wrote a spooky description of the tree.

"The long grass is attacking the tree like fire. Scary sounds come towards me. The tree rattled. Heart pumping. Sweat pouring. I see dark in the sky. There is a spooky shadow in the grass. I see blood dripping from one of the branches…."

What do you think? Could we improve it? Add your ideas in the comments...

Emily Naylor Visit

On Friday (this post is a wee bit late, sorry!) we had a visit from Emily Naylor, the most capped Black Stick ever! She shared some of her Olympic and Commonwealth Games stories with us and showed us a great video from the 2012 London Games. Then she took us all out for some hockey coaching. Imagine that, getting hockey coaching from an actual Black Stick Olympian!

Making paper

As part of our inquiry into books, we wanted to make our own paper. We had a lot of old used paper that we thought we could recycle. We weren't sure which kinds of paper would make the best recycled paper, so we set up a few different trials to find out.
First we ripped up the paper into tiny pieces and added it to a bucket of water. We will leave the paper for a few days to separate.
Watch this space to see what we do next, and see our finished paper...

Our visit to Napier MTG

Today we went to the Napier MTG as part of our inquiry into books. We saw some very old books (more than 300 years old!) some very expensive books (one cost more than $10,000) and some very small books. We learnt about how books are made, we did a quiz on different kinds of books, and we even got a chance to make our very own book plates. What was your favourite part?

Mekong River Library Boat

Today we watched a video about the Mekong Library Boat. This is a charity that provides a mobile library for children that wouldn't otherwise get to read books, children in remote villages that don't have books.

Our Inquiry "Tuning In"

At the beginning of our inquiry into books, we started by talking about what kinds of books we knew about and which books we liked to read. Write in the comments any other books you like to read...

Describing a setting

Here is our class writing today. We were using what we could see, hear, feel and smell to describe a setting. Please write in the comments any more descriptive sentences you can think of...

I can see black, spooky spider webs in every corner of the room. I walk forward slowly and suddenly I can feel the webs sticking to my face. “AARRGGHH” I scream and rip them off my face. Wolves howl in the night like dogs having a giant evil disco. The smell of old wet wood and dead things rotting hits my nose like I’m stuck in a garbage dump.

The Builder's Pet Story Window.

We read a story called the Builder's Pet.
We had to pick out the 4 main ideas - including the problem, the solution and the ending.
We illustrated each idea onto a strip of card.
We read our story to buddies in Room 10.

Show don't tell.

We wrote a piece about winter but we were not allowed to say the word winter!
We had to show the reader it was winter.

Then we asked Room 13 to help us to log into Google Docs and publish it.

More about autumn

The Field of Remembrance

The white crosses mark the soldier's spot
Golden leaves surround the crosses.
The names on the crosses were people who went to war.
The classrooms protect the Field of Rememberance.
Arlo

The leaves surround the crosses like a golden carpet.
Classrooms protect the crosses.
Children stand thoughtfully, wondering who theses soldiers are..
Amrit.

The leaves make a golden carpet around the crosses.
They flutter down from the trees.
The children wonder why there is a nurse among the soldiers crosses.
We will remember them.
Sophie

Library Visit - April 2015 - Kate C

In the afternoon we went to the lovely library. We went with room 6. We walked there as the library is very close.when we arrived at the library lots of people came in and out to get books out and return them. We got out our bubble catcher and wrote some things about the library. We only went there for a little bit. We had a cool time. People to the library in the holidays, after school and in the weekends.

Library - 23 April 2015 - Lucia

When we arrived at the library we saw lots of people walking in and out of the library. You can borrow books but you have to return them. Some people forget the books. It is bad to forget your books. I would not like to forget my books. The busiest time at the library is the holidays.

Te Reo - April 2015 - Georgia-Grace

In our class we have been learning about greetings in Te Reo. We made books.

Summerset Visit. - 23 March 2015 - Hayley

In the morning we got ready for Summerset. Most of the children in room 7 brought flowers for the old people. Everyone had to choose a car to go to Summerset in. When we got to Summerset we had to wait for a long time. Hugo's great grandmother was at Summerset too. We had lots of fun because my old person told me a story.

Summerset Visit - 31 March 2015 - Kate Rendle

In the early mornings we went to Summerset to go and see old people. They were very nice indeed. The people's names were Rose and Margaret. There were so many rooms. I just couldn't count the rooms as there were so many halls. Hugo's great grandma was there. Room 7 had such a great time at Summerset. We took our "Me Bag" there and then we went in the cars back to school.
