Our buddy class maths investigation

Today we taught our buddy class how to use our knowledge of area to design a swimming pool using blocks. This was the same investigation we did last week but were teaching our older buddies how to do it!

Measuring Area

Today we tried to make a plan for a swimming pool using cubes to model it. We thought about all the different ways we could make a swimming pool with an area of 12 cubes. Harry was the winner with 7 different designs!

Our maths investigation

We have been learning about length and area. We had a competition to see who could make the tallest sandcastle. We then measured it using blocks to test whose was the biggest. The winners made a sandcastle 29 blocks tall!

Fruit kebabs!

Last week, Mrs Jarvis' Marvelous maths group made fruit kebabs. Here is a message from her!
"Hi everyone,
We wanted to share our learning with you.  Over the last few weeks we have been exploring fractions and equal sharing.  Before we made kebabs we had to share the fruit out between the 9 people in our group.  Sometimes we got a whole piece of fruit, or more than one of each fruit. Other times we only got a part or a fraction of the fruit. We are strong mathematicians who show and represent our thinking in different ways.  We have been using equipment, equations, pictures and relationship charts to help justify our thinking.
We had so much fun and the fruit kebabs were delicious!"

Working with fractions

Today, squares group were finding fractions of a set using skip counting to check their answer. They were working out the answer to problems like half of 12 or one third of 15!
